I think it’s safe to say that the matte lip is going to be sticking around for quite a while now, and I’m loving the fact that so many drugstore brands have decided to come out with some affordable versions of matte lippies – it’s easier than ever to put together a matte lip collection in a variety of shades without breaking the bank (especially after the holidays).
One of the latest to grace my desk? The new Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquids, which will be rolling into stores in Canada starting this month.
Available in 10 shades, the Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquids promise two times more pigment for big, bold colour with a soft matte finish.
“Bright lip colour is the beauty equivalent to a superhero cape: As soon as a woman puts it on, she feels ready to conquer the world”
Upon first glance, I loved the look of these – simple, yet chic packaging and a selection of bold colours drew me right in. I’m definitely big on bold reds and berry shades, and was immediately drawn to Berry Boost (which is still my favourite shade). These lippies do give the lips a big pop of colour, which is something that I really look for when choosing a lip colour. They’re very pigmented, so much so that they do leave a bit of a stain behind afterwards, which means that even as the lipstick fades a hint of colour remains – something that has made me become very fond of stains as of late. Win-win for me.
When it comes to application, the applicator is a little bit different. It comes in a long, thing, almost cylindrical form, with a bit of a flat edge on two sides. I find that it’s easiest to apply product using the flat side before using the tip to define, smooth and fill in.
As for the product itself, I’ve really been enjoying the formula. It’s extremely rich and creamy, with a soft, velvety finish. I’ve definitely found that some matte lipsticks can become quite drying and flat looking once applied, and I didn’t find that this was the case at all.
If you’re looking for a full-on matte finish, you’re probably not going to get it right off the bat with these. I find that they still have a creamy look with a bit of sheen (as seen in my photo below). To help achieve more of a matte look, I’ve found that it’s best to apply a smaller amount of product (if you put too much on, you’re not going to get the same effect and will have more of a glossy look) and to give your lips a quick blot after application so the colour dries better, or you might find they have a bit more of a lightly glossy look (note: the below swatches have been applied following these steps).
The Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquids will be available in Canada starting in January 2016 at $12.99. Will you give them a try? What are your favourite mattes?
