Going Bare: Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X – the Halfway Point

I’ll gladly admit it – I’m a total hair-free fiend.  I’m constantly on patrol to make sure my legs are smooth and my bikini line has the all clear for bathing suit season.  When I heard about the Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X, I was beyond excited.  Could I really get the results from getting professional laser hair removal in the privacy of my own home, on my own time?  I had to get my hands on it to see if it could really get the job done.

First off, let me give you a little info on the Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X.  How does it work? “The Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X was designed on the principle of selective photothermolysis: Beams of laser energy are absorbed by the dark pigment in hair and converted to heat, which disables the hair follicle, preventing it from growing new hair. This process is most effective on hair during the growth phase (anagen phase). For optimum results, the Tria Laser 4X must be used every week for three months.”  Basically, the tip sends out quick pulses of laser energy – you zap each spot for a second, then move onto the next overlapping spot.  Each area on the body has a recommended pulse count so you can make sure that you’re giving it the perfect amount of exposure (ie.  Upper lip requires about 25 pulses per session which will last about 2-3 minutes, the upper let requires about 600 per side).  The device does come with a handy pulse counter  so you can easily keep track of what you’ve done.  The pulse targets the hair follicle so it can get right to the root to prevent re-growth.  There are 5 levels of intensity – you can start off on the lower end and work your way up depending on the sensitivity of the area and your pain tolerance. One thing I do want to mention if you’re considering purchasing the Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X – it only works on certain skin shades (it works best on fair to light brown skin tones with light brown to black body hair) as skin that is not safe for treatment may absorb too much laser light, which can lead to injuries.  There is a chart on the back of the packaging to help you determine this, and if you’re worried that you might not match, you won’t have to worry.  The device does come with a skin sensor (located on the bottom) which needs to be used for it to unlock before every use.

Now on to the good stuff – my experience so far with the Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X.  I decided to start with my bikini line (not having to worry about shaving/waxing, ingrowns and razor burn down there any more? Sounds great to me) and my upper lip – I only have light hair there, but would love to never see it again when I happen to take a look into one of those uber-magnifying, show-all-your-imperfections mirrors.  I’m currently at about the halfway point in my treatments (6 sessions) and thought this would be the perfect time to share my thoughts and progress.

At the 6 week mark, I am really happy to say I’m definitely seeing progress.  I’ve noticed that the hair on my bikini line has seen a drastic decrease in regrowth.  You have to shave the area you will be zapping prior to each session so that the laser can work properly, and I was so excited when I realized that even if I were to stop now I wouldn’t have to shave nearly as often.  After a week of not shaving, there is very little regrowth, and in some patches the hair is barely coming back in at all.  At this point, I’m really confident that if I continue with my weekly treatments for the next month and a half I won’t have to worry about shaving any more – but I’ll update again at that point to let you know how it goes.  I am still using a lower level of intensity in this area – I’m at about level 2-3 as I do find the bikini area to be quite sensitive.  It feels almost like a little pin prick with every pulse.  The upper lip area is much easier to manage – I’m using level 4 there and I just get a warm feeling from it.  It does take a little time, but I figured I would start with smaller areas for now – I usually have a Monday routine of watching the shows I missed Sunday night (Dexter and True Blood!) and getting it all done.

I will be updating at the end of my 3 month period with the results of using the Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X on these two areas before moving on to the next.  Make sure you check back to see how it goes.  And if you have any questions about any other aspects of my experience with the laser, ask away in the comments below!

Price: $449 – which I personally think is great considering how much professional laser hair removal costs for one area of the body.
