I will admit I’m not the craftiest or most creative person in the world. My mom’s an amazing artist and can make just about anything, but those creative “genes” seemed to bypass me and went straight to my brothers. Needless to say, I found myself in a bit of a pickle when my best friend decided we should give each other DIY Christmas gifts this year. Of course, I went right to Pinterest to find some inspiration. I found this amazing idea to make a DIY Jewelry Shelf out of an Ikea cutlery rack from The DIY Mommy and thought it would be the perfect gift for my jewelry loving BFF. You can follow her instructions at the link above or check out mine here – I made a couple of little changes when I made mine!
What you will need:
- Cutlery tray (I used the Rationell tray from Ikea)
- Spray paint
- Contact paper (found at dollar store)
- Decorative knobs (found at Target)
- Picture hanging kit (found at dollar store)
Directions:
1. Start off by spray painting the tray and hooks you will be using with your choice of colour. I used a couple of coats to make sure the colour was perfectly applied and even. Leave to dry.
2. Measure and cut sheets of contact paper to fit in each of the compartments. Contact paper is so easy to work with – peel of the backing and stick it right on to the wood – and you can find many pretty styles to suit the look you’re going for!
3. Time to add the “hangers.” I used pretty knobs in the slimmer compartments to loop necklaces around, attaching them with a glue gun. I then screwed the eye hooks into the square compartment for earrings, and attached the other hooks along the bottom so that longer necklaces could hang off when the shelf is on the wall.
There you have it – an easy, inexpensive DIY jewelry shelf. You can play around with the colours you use to make it your own and create the perfect fit for your decor.
