This week I decided to take the plunge and do something I’ve never done before. I’d also been a little scared but curious and knew that I was going to have to give in sooner or later. So, a couple of days ago I popped my Brazilian waxing cherry.
When Allure Body Bar in Toronto got in touch with me and offered to have me in to experience their version of the Brazilian wax, the Quickzilian (which only takes 8 minutes. 8 minutes!!!), I was definitely intrigued but a little apprehensive. I mean, I’ve never had the hair yanked out of my nether regions before and from what I’ve heard it was going to hurt. Nevertheless, with my Vegas trip looming days ahead, I decided to go for it. Not having to worry about anything down there while wearing a bikini for most of the trip and the low maintenance afterwards? Yep, sign me up.
The day of I arrived half an hour early to take advantage of the “No Scream Cream” because, well, I’m a bit of a baby. I meant to take some Advil beforehand as well but I totally forgot – definitely not a bad idea before getting a wax as it will help ease the pain. Then I waited… And said a prayer for my lady bits. Half an hour later Alaa from Allure came in and got me positioned and ready to go, told me how to breathe to make it easier for me, and got to work excavating my lady cave (hey, if the shoe fits). She was fast, precise and made me feel extremely comfortable – another thing I was unsure about. The nervousness disappeared very quickly and I was quickly put at ease. No word of a lie, 8 minutes later (it may have been a little less) and I was bare down there. I would be lying to you if I said I didn’t feel any pain. I mean, I was getting hair ripped out at the root. Some areas were a little more painful while other weren’t as noticeable, but the pain didn’t last long, and after a patch was finished I was good to go. Once I was finished Alaa told me to apply some lotion (from local brand Lovefresh!), to get redressed and I would be good to go. She then gave me a card and explained aftercare to me: wear loose, cotton panties, stay away from any activities that would cause sweat, scrub withing 24-48 hours with an exfoliating glove, avoid a lot of heat (saunas, tanning beds, steam rooms) and avoid ingrowns with PFB Varnish. Afterwards I experience a little bit of soreness that showed up a few hours later, and I used unscented lotion to help calm the area.
So, what did I think? Honestly, I enjoyed it. Ok, no, not the pain… But I think it’s absolutely worth it. Being hair-free and not having to put so much maintenance south of the equator is a big pro for me, especially with summer being just around the corner. I pretty much live in my backyard pool when the heat hits and hate having to keep up with my bikini line and the bumps/razor burn that follows. I’ve heard that the first time is the worst and it will get better from here on out, so I can confidently say that I’ll be returning to Allure Body Bar in the future.
