Le sigh. Birchbox, one of the original beauty subscription services, is packing its bags and taking off from Canada. Katia Beauchamp, founder of Birchbox, recently released this statement on the decision:
“We are so sad to let you know that we have made the difficult decision to put our Canada operations on hold. We love our Canadian customers, but with the current exchange rate and high shipping costs, we can’t create the Birchbox experience at a price that is fair to you. We will do what we can to make that a possibility; until then, please know that we sincerely appreciate your support and enthusiasm for Birchbox, and we plan to take good care of our Canadian subscribers as we wind down in this market.”
So, what does this mean for Canadian subscribers? Current subscribers will continue to receive boxes through the end of March, at which time the company will stop shipping to Canada – the online shop will remain open until April. If you have a monthly subscription, you won’t be billed past March, and if you have an annual subscription, you will be credited the amount remaining on your account in Birchbox points (though I have heard that you may be able to receive a refund if you reach out to customer service). I would keep an eye on this just to make sure the points to get credited to your account, as you’ll only have until April 2016 to spend these in the Birchbox store – start looking now to avoid any issues when ordering!
I’m a little sad to see Birchbox go – I recently started receiving their boxes and was looking forward to trying their new “athleisure” brand, Arrow. If you’ve got questions about your account, I suggest reaching out to the Birchbox team on Facebook or at https://support.birchbox.ca to make sure you get the answers you need.
