How often do you think about what’s in the products that you’re using on your skin, what you’re putting in your hair, what’s really behind that body cream you love? Over the past few years, I’ve taken a much broader interest in the ingredients used in the products that I try out; being able to read the label and understand exactly what’s in a product before I use it makes it that much more enticing. SCHMEAR Naturals came into my life recently and I loved the fact that their ingredients are unbelievably easy to understand (more on that to come). I’ve been giving two of the new SCHMEAR Face Masks a try over the last few weeks and I’m very pleased to say that I’ve found a couple of new beauty routine staples in them.
SCHMEAR Naturals is a Vancouver-based business (yay for supporting Canadian biz!) that started off in the kitchen. Co-creators Kitty + Jeffrey are all about using food-grade ingredients – think real food and plant ingredients – to create cruelty-free, Vegan products that can be mixed and matched to create the perfect skincare regimen. Thanks to these natural ingredients, these masks are also very well suited to sensitive skin – the ingredients are gentle enough to help out those of us with reactive skin. Their products are all handmade in small batches, so you know that the same quality and care goes into every single one. The SCHMEAR Face Masks continue on with this, using these incredible ingredients that you can feel good about.
Now, when I’m talking about food-grade ingredients, I’m not kidding. If it’s good enough to go inside your body, it’s definitely good enough to go on that delicate skin. The SCHMEAR Face Masks smell good enough to eat, though you might want to refrain from doing so – seriously, your face will thank you because it means more for that beautiful mug. I’ve been testing out the Hibiscus + Pomegranate Face Mask and the Turmeric + Coconut Face Mask and they both smell fantastic – especially the Hibiscus one.
The SCHMEAR face masks come in powder format, which I really like. I’ve been using a few products like this lately and I love how you have that little bit of extra customization when it comes to using them. Start with a teaspoon of mask powder and add 2 teaspoons of water, mix and add more of either to find your desired consistency. I tend to like these a little on the thicker side, usually at a ratio of about 1 teaspoon of mask powder to 1.5 teaspoons of water.
Now, let’s get to the two SCHMEAR face masks that I tried out!
First up, the Hibiscus + Pomegranate Antioxidant Face Mask, which is my personal fave. This mask is great for brightening and balancing out the skin. Hibiscus, which is also called the “botox plant,” and pomegranate come together to fight back against sun damage and ageing. This mask also receives an antioxidant and exfoliating boost from the addition of organic carrot, papaya extract, and geranium oil. My skin feels angel soft after using it and I really notice a boost in brightness over the next couple of days. I also noticed a reduction in breakouts when using it. The only problem is I’m going to go through it wayyyyy too quickly because I love it. Not a bad problem to have.
I’ve also been trying out the Turmeric + Coconut Calming Face Mask, which is quickly becoming another favourite. Turmeric, as I’m sure many of you are aware, is amazing for dealing with redness + blemishes thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. Coconut balances things out by providing a generous dose of natural moisture. This mask’s soothing benefits continue with the addition of cucumber extract, organic coconut milk and roman chamomile oil. This one has been a lifesaver since I’ve been wearing masks for 8-10 hours at a time for shifts at work. My skin is not happy with me afterwards, so I’ve been counting on this to make it happy again. It helps to tone down any breakouts that come up (trust me, there are a lot. I never thought my skin would look like it did when I was a teenager again at 32!) and to help soothe it so I can get back to normal more quickly.
I have to say, thanks to the combination of incredible ingredients + fantastic results, I’ve become a big fan of these SCHMEAR face masks and can’t wait to try more products from their lineup out. Being able to find out exactly what’s in them and knowing what the different ingredients do makes using them a bit more of an enjoyable experience. They’ll definitely be getting a lot of use on my end in the future!
How do you feel about the ingredients in the products that you use?
