Mother’s Day is a very special day for me; my mom truly is my best friend and even though she knows how special she is every day, this is the perfect time to do something a little special for her. This year we have even more to celebrate with my little bro’s girlfriend Ashleigh becoming a mama two months ago (I may be a little biased, but my nephew Zayne is definitely one of the cutest babies ever). My mom’s normally down in Costa Rica at this time of the year but she made a surprise trip back up here and tomorrow we’ll be able to celebrate with her, Ashleigh and my grandma. We’ve planned a full-on high tea to celebrate and I decided to make a nice gift for each of them. If you’re still looking for something to get for a special woman in your life, these easy DIY Succulent planters make the perfect mother’s day gift (even for those moms who can’t keep a plant alive) and take less than 5 minutes to put together.
All you’ll need to make these easy DIY succulent planters are succulents (easily found at florists and nurseries), pebbles, potting soil (cactus soil is the best) and mugs to plant them in. I found these mugs at Indigo – they always have great mugs – and Marshalls/Winners are always good bets. While these ones are perfect for Mother’s Day, these DIY succulent planters also make great gifts for many different occasions; think birthdays, showers, or just because!
How to put together easy DIY Succulent Planters:
- To get started, put a layer of pebbles at the bottom of the mug. Since (hopefully) your mug doesn’t have a hole at he bottom of it, this will help with drainage when watering the succulent.
- Add potting soil about 1/2-3/4 of the way up the mug.
- Lightly squeeze the sides of the plastic pot the succulent came in to loosen it up and then very gently remove it from the pot. You can use your fingers to loosen up the dirt around the roots.
- Place the succulent in the mug, topping off with more soil if needed to put it in place the way you want it. (Check this article for tips on caring for succulents)
And that’s all there is to it! These easy DIY succulent planters are super cute, take almost no time to put together, are inexpensive and will definitely put a smile on someone’s face. What other DIY gifts do you like to create? Would you like to see more of these?
